Last week was the final jury day of De Gouden Noot, the international packaging innovation competition organised by NVC Packaging Centre. As one of the ten finalists, we had the opportunity to present Kælt directly to the jury.
Lene Hultén presented Kælt on behalf of NNZ to a jury of around 15 packaging specialists. She explained the idea behind the concept, how it works and the potential we see for improving the cooling of delicate fresh produce such as blueberries.
The challenge behind Kælt
Kælt was developed around a specific challenge in fresh produce transport: how can cold air be distributed more evenly throughout a load?
Kælt uses a transport crate with integrated space for cold airflow underneath the product, while air channels guide an upward airflow for more homogeneous cooling.
Looking ahead
After an intensive development process, it was great to finally present Kælt directly to the jury. We appreciated the questions, the discussion that followed and the interest in the concept. A big thank you to NVC Packaging Centre for organising the final jury day and giving all ten finalists the opportunity to present their innovations.
Kælt was developed to create a more homogeneous airflow through fresh produce transport packaging. Initial proof-of-principle testing with blueberries showed more homogeneous cooling across the measured positions under the tested conditions. The results show the potential of the airflow principle behind Kælt for more consistent temperature management during fresh produce transport.
Now we wait until 8 April 2027, when the winners of De Gouden Noot will be announced during the award ceremony. In the meantime, we continue the development of Kælt with a clear focus on its application in fresh produce transport.
